A wool/angora two-ply handspun ready to be skeined, washed and then made into something wonderful I hope.
The weather wasn't cooperating. Yesterday we were supposed to be at the Flemington Market (our first time at Flemington) raking in the cash. But the weather had other ideas.
At first we thought the blast of winter cold (a max of 14 degrees) would be good for business. Perfect scarf wearing weather. But then strong winds, hail and thunder were predicted. Definately not the sort of weather you want for an outside market with a tent that could blow away or be damaged by hail. Not to mention the fact that the scarves could get soaked or blow away. Or that everyone could decided to stay in bed rather than venture out into the winter conditions. So we decided not to tempt fate and stay home.
We are hoping the next market – Red Hill on Saturday 2 May – is huge. It needs to be to make up for the last three markets. Red Hill on Black Saturday. Mornington on Easter Monday – I think everyone had gone away. The Flemington wash out.
We are casual market stall holders so our livelihood does not depend on the cash we make at the market. But I've been sparing a thought for those who do, those permanent market stall holders who do markets each and every weekend. It really is a hard slog and so much in the lap of the Gods.
I've got my fingers crossed that the Gods are smiling next Saturday. And that the chill in the air is just enough to turn everyone's thoughts to scarves.
My girls and I came up to the hills on Sunday for the Gembrook market. We rugged up as if we were going to the snow and bought fruit, bread and honey from the valiant stallholders braving the cold. It is disappointing when the weather lets you down, but if you persevere, you will have markets that exceed you expectations. Find a market that feels right for you and will develop a customer base over time. It took me a year of casual markets, but now I have return customers at almost every market.

:-) I did a weekly market over winter last season, it was insane, I paid $35 to be there at 7am until 1pm, got wet and cold, put up with unappreciating customers and then packed up and went home, I sold 3 things I think for the whole season, I don't know what came over me? hahaha
don't feel too sorry, the others I did were fine. Your post just brought back memories.
