Aside from finding the perfect natural light just when you want it, the hardest thing when photographing your handmade stuff is making it look as good as it does in real life. Its a real challenge and we're always trying to perfect our photos.
The move to the new place a few months back has got the natural light thing sorted. Our interior hallway is bathed in light during the day thanks to a skylight and an east-facing toilet!
Now I've just got to get the styling part right! I've realised that scarves are one of the hardest things to photograph well. How to you convey the length properly when you only have a small square image size?
Since we've produced coaster gift sets and totes from our ranges of screenprinted fabrics I've found that these items are a cinch to photograph. You can display them in a range of contexts and use lots of stylish props.
Even mr greenolive's leather pouches and slips are much easier to photograph and style.
Maybe I'll leave the scarves for the market stall. You really need to see the colours and feel the scarves in the flesh to appreciate how lovely they are!
